When Dr. Nancy DiMartino, a medical oncologist at Lafayette Cancer Care, walks into an exam room, she can tell a patient’s outlook with one question: “How are you?”
Some grip the arms of their chair and say, “I don’t know, you tell me.”
But others smile and say, “I’m great. How are you, Dr. D?”
Staying positive can be a challenge when someone is battling breast cancer and not feeling well. DiMartino said even after patients are cancer free, they struggle to learn to live after cancer. She said there are generally two groups of people: the worriers and the positive thinkers.
It’s generally accepted that positive thinking is good for cancer patients and survivors, DiMartino said. It may not extend a life or keep someone alive, but she said it does is improve a patient’s quality of life.
For nearly 30 years, DiMartino said she wondered what the difference was between her patients who were happy and enjoying life and those who were always upset. Then it hit her – the difference was their attitude.
Now, when patients ask her what else they can do for their health, DiMartino said she tells them to stay positive and surround themselves with other people who are positive, too.
At the YWCA breast cancer support group, facilitator Candy English said having a sisterhood of women who’ve gone through the same thing is uplifting.
“Before, I thought when you have breast cancer, you either die or you live,” said English, who had breast cancer in 2000 and 2007.
She said she didn’t think it was something that she would wonder about daily, but it is.
“It’s on your mind forever,” English said.
Having a group to ask questions – no matter how silly or embarrassing – and to share with is exactly what Jo Honig had in mind when she helped start the group 26 years ago.
