Milton woman vying for title of Miss India Canada 2012

Twenty-two-year-old Milton resident Arti Chopra is one of 16 finalists vying for the title of Miss India Canada 2012 this weekend in Toronto. The winner will be crowned Saturday night onstage at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel after being judged on their Indian dress, talent and public speaking ability.

Chopra said she’s both nervous and excited about the next few days when she will meet her fellow contestants for the first time and attend rehearsals.“This is totally out of my comfort zone,” said Chopra, who decided to send in her application at the last minute. “I’ve never done anything like this before.”

A graduate of the University of Guelph with an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree with an Honours post-graduate diploma in Special Needs Education from Sheridan College, Chopra decided to “do it for the kids.”Should she win, the former Milton District high school student wants to act on her ambition to bring awareness to the Canadian South Asian community regarding children and adults with intellectual disabilities and special needs education.

“After completing my studies in Special Needs Education and working with children with intellectual disabilities, this topic has become very close to my heart,” said Chopra, a lifeguard and swim instructor at Milton Leisure Centre for the past six years. “I plan to make resources and information regarding this topic more readily available in the South Asian communities for families in need.”
The title of Miss India Canada 2012 carries with it numerous awards and prizes including a round-trip ticket to India and cash scholarships.
